The Adelaide Dirt League (ADL) is one of our most successful junior mountain biking programs. The perfect mix of coaching and competition makes it the ultimate rider development program. The programs categories cater for riders aged 8 – 15 and incorporate a Schools Trophy for students of schools with active mountain biking programs. ADL is a fantastic stepping stone to club and state racing as well as higher level development opportunities.

Program Information

The Adelaide Dirt League combines skills coaching with competitions based on modified versions of popular mountain biking disciplines. Each competition is designed by our coaches to reward participants who demonstrate riding with control and accuracy while removing the focus on pure speed. This distinctive approach not only shapes a higher calibre of rider, but also promotes a prolonged engagement with sport through their teenage years by giving them the necessary space to grow.

Skills sessions and competitions are delivered at various locations around Adelaide, giving participants an opportunity to experience, ride and explore a diverse collection of trails.

Categories

We have created a range of categories and program options to ensure that the Adelaide Dirt League meets the needs of as many riders as possible.

Under 10 Under 13 Under 15

Under 10 Program

The Under 10 program is for riders who turn 9 or 10 this year and emphasises the acquisition of skills and experience through game-based activities. This category is delivered separately to the others to enable us to both accommodate the specific needs of the riders’ physical, cognitive and emotional development as well as prolong their engagement with the sport.

During each session, coaches will deliver skills instruction before leading the group on guided rides and playing skills-based games. The competitive weeks will consist of a series of challenges that allow the riders to demonstrate and practise their skills and will not be measured or recorded. The primary focus for this age group is on having fun and enjoying the sport safely.

U10 Participants must be able to ride on two wheels confidently and with good control. Bikes with pedal brakes are not allowed.

Our age categories are inclusive which creates overlap with those used in club racing sanctioned by AusCycling, which are exclusive. This enables us to provide a more supportive environment for riders with less experience in the sport.

Under 13 Program

The Under 13 program is for riders who turn 11 – 13 this year and will highlight the key skills and techniques that will underpin their performance during the competitions. Our coaches will help them develop their skills and identify when to employ them. Riders will be challenged to display good bike handling and control skills while learning to manage risk, energy and focus.

Competitions Only: We are also offering an Under 13 Events Only option for riders to enter only the four competitions. We strongly recommend that participants who take up this option join one of our other skills development programs or seek proper training from a reputable coach.

U13 Participants are assumed to have at least some mountain biking experience.

U13 Competitions Only Participants are assumed to be able to assess and manage risk independently while riding and competing.

Parents / guardians are required to remain present for the duration of all competitions. To minimise program costs, they will be assigned a volunteering role during some or all of the events, such as marshalling or assisting coaches and participants.

Under 15 (Competition Category Only)

The Under 15 events category is for riders who turn 14 or 15 this year and is available for entry into the competitions only. Unfortunately we are not able to offer the coaching sessions to this age group at this time.

Schools Trophy

All Under 13 and Under 15 participants will be able to nominate and compete for their school, using the competitions to accumulate points towards the Adelaide Dirt League Schools Trophy. Schools who are interested in fielding a team can either have students register themselves individually or contact us directly to arrange a group booking or a tailored rider development program to support their riders.
